About this site

Plug-in Solar Check exists to answer one question: can you legally fit a plug-in solar panel where you live, and what do you have to do about it.

Who runs it

This site is run by SVBY, a small design and publishing studio. We are not electricians, we are not a solar installer, and we do not fit anything. If you need work done, you need a qualified person, and this site will tell you when that is the case.

Where the rules come from

Every rule stated on this site is taken from one of two documents, and both are named next to the text that uses them.

• The statutory instrument that made plug-in solar lawful to connect in Great Britain, published on legislation.gov.uk.
• The Plug-in Solar Device Interim Product Specification, published by the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero. The law names this document, which is what gives it force.

Where we could not verify something against one of those, we have left it out rather than guess. Every page carries the date the rules were last checked.

What this site is not

It is not professional electrical advice, and it is not a compliance certificate. The check gives an indication based on what you tell it. It cannot see your building, your wiring or your lease.

The instructions supplied with your own kit are binding. If they conflict with anything here, follow them, and tell us so we can fix the page.

How the site is paid for

We earn a commission if you buy a kit through a link on this site, and a referral fee if you find a fitter through one. That is the whole business model. We hold no stock, sell nothing directly, and have no arrangement with any manufacturer about what the check says.

The answers the check gives are not affected by whether a product is one we can earn from. If a kit is not suitable for your situation, the site says so.
